Crime Prevention
NZ Police are a big part of the community, they are involved with many initiatives to ensure it is a safe and thriving place for all. As with any other CBD or Town centre we have issues as well, but the biggest difference in Henderson is we have a lot of really engaged, realistic and passionate people striving to makes things better. Through our work on the Henderson Town Centre Plan, we work closely together with the Henderson police to advocate for our business community.
Preventing crime is better than responding to one that has already occurred. Knowing they are safe, helps our community feel secure and more at ease. Businesses have a big part to play in preventing crime and some simple, effective techniques can help keep your business safe from crime.
Use shop displays and layout to prevent crime
- Windows: Keep your front window clear of posters etc.
- Cash register: Position the cash register near the entry and greet every customer when they walk in
- Shelving: Position shelving in one direction so you have a clear view down each aisle
- Mirrors: Use large mirrors to see every part of your store
- Displays: Display smaller merchandise closer to the cash register counter, not at the back of the shop
Handling Cash Safely
- Timings: Vary the banking time each day
- Don’t promote: Don’t carry cash in a bag that has a bank logo
- Staff: Use adult staff to do the banking (preferably go in pairs)
- Driving: If driving, lock the vehicle doors and use different routes each day
- Walking: If walking to the bank, take the most direct route
- Be Alert: Carry a mobile phone and be alert of other people and vehicles
